Safe Motherhood: The Right of Every Mother

Safe Motherhood Day primarily focuses on the health and welfare of women throughout their pregnancy. Observed every year on April 11, National Safe Motherhood Day serves as a reminder to provide a safe space for every mother. An initiative of the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI), the day is marked to create and raise awareness around the importance of safe motherhood and providing proper care to expecting mothers.

What is safe motherhood?

Motherhood brings the most profound joy and fulfilment to every woman. For a woman, being a parent is a heart-lifting experience. It is central to the purpose of her life. Focusing on the unique relationship of a mother and child, safe motherhood means that a woman receives the care she needs to be safe and healthy throughout her pregnancy and childbirth.

On the occasion of Safe Motherhood Day, we share a list of dos and don’ts for expecting mothers.

  • Maintain a healthy weight and consume a well-balanced diet. Try not to gain too much weight.
  • If you intend to become pregnant, you need first reach a healthy weight.
  • Take adequate rest and drink plenty of fluids. An exertion should be avoided.
  • Safe exercises can be done as per the recommendation of your doctor. These exercises aid in vaginal birth and the avoidance of c-sections.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking. Stay away from the usage of illegal substances. We also advise mothers to limit their intake of caffeine.
  • Do not miss hospital appointments for regular checkups and follow prenatal recommendations, including getting lab tests and ultrasounds as suggested by your doctor.
  • Before and during pregnancy, use medication to control preexisting medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart ailments.
  • Be on the lookout for signs such as bleeding, pain, headache, palpitations, and contractions. If you experience any of these conditions, go to the nearby hospital immediately.
